“Batik is one of Malaysia’s main heritage and to understand the craft behind the art; I realized how much work was put into creation when Tengku Puan Al Haj, founder of YANAS invited me to Kelantan to see craftspeople at work. For this craft to be sustainable, we must make it more relevant. 6 designers- all previous participants of the AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search Project were given a chance to re-invent Batik by infusing their design language with fabrics created and made through the YANAS Foundation. With this, we hope that Batik will be enjoyed by even more people as they adapt it to their lifestyle.” – ANDREW TAN, Founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week

“It’s a new stepping stone for the batik Kelantan industry and the collaboration between all parties such as Prison of Kelantan, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Yayasan Noor Al-Syakur (YANAS) and Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week. Everyone is playing their roles. What we are doing and hoping for KL Fashion Week is to bring us to another era/step, for us to introduce batik to the eyes of the world according to the interpretation of how the designers see it. It is very important to have this new outlook, because we have our capabilities, but we are unable to understand the fashion industry; so the best platform is to give it to the professional to do it. I would like to say thank you to KL Fashion Week RTW for believing in us and to be our partner in this. As you know, batik has been around for a long time but it’s the first that we are bringing our batik to another level. This collaboration is a new beginning, a new chapter of fashion when there is no rule, no boundaries for the artisans to have a greater height to understand the demand of their craft outside of Kelantan and Malaysia. “ – YM TENGKU (PUAN) TEMENGGONG YTM TUNKU DATO’ HAJJAH NURHAYATI TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PUTRA AL-HAJ, Founder of YANAS
