It was the second week of November and it marks the start of the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2020 schedule. However, these aren't the shows as we know them with usual runway shows on hold due to lockdowns, social-distancing and other Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) measures. This season, designers were forced to think unconventionally when it came to showcasing their work and the digital platform seems like the way to go.
Syomirizwa Gupta opted to tell its story by way of a mysterious fashion film named Kegusaran (Disquietness). Set in a parallel world, the resulting short film was directed by an award-winning filmmaker Zahir Omar, whose film, Fly By Night, has won many accolades both locally and regionally. Kegusaran features some of the brand’s previous iconic pieces combined with new creations worn by models that lived in a fictional world – clearly going through some rough experiences.

"At the start I was a little bit scared of proposing something so unusual to my audience especially those who are familiar with my brand," says Syomir. "But I trust Zahir’s work. He has a vision of how he would like to portray my garments and as a fellow creative, I totally understand this. Furthermore, it is a strange period that we are living in right now and the perfect time to experiment. One thing that is for sure, being true to the DNA of Syomirizwa Gupta, the culture and historical references are crystal clear. "

Written by Jiman Casablancas, the film was narrated by Malaysia’s celebrated actor, Bront Palarae with accompanying music by Engineering Bureau. The dreamlike film is Zahir’s first foray into directing a fashion short. “I am honoured to work with this team of creatives. And I am glad for the trust that the brand has granted on me to create something that is unique and dark but still keeping to the vision of the designer”, he explains.
You can watch the Syomirizwa Gupta Fashion Film at KL Fashion Week Digital 2020, Episode 5 on 10:30
